The control arm is the link between your car's body and the wheel. It lets the wheel move up and down over the road while keeping it in the right position. Because it works every second you drive, its rubber bushings and ball joint slowly wear out. Here are the signs that it is time for a check.
1. A clunking or knocking noise
A dull "clunk" when you drive over speed bumps, potholes or rough roads is the most common sign. It usually means the bushings or the ball joint have play, so metal parts are knocking against each other.
2. The steering wheel wanders or vibrates
If the car pulls to one side, feels loose on the motorway or the steering wheel shakes at certain speeds, a worn control arm may be letting the wheel move in ways it should not.
3. Uneven tyre wear
Look at the edges of the front tyres. If one edge is wearing much faster than the other, the wheel angle has probably changed. A worn control arm is a frequent cause, and new tyres will wear out quickly until it is fixed.
4. The car dips or leans when braking
Worn bushings let the wheel move forward and backward. You may feel the front of the car dip more than usual or shift to one side when you brake hard.
5. Visible damage
During a tyre change or service, ask the mechanic to look at the arms. Warning signs include:
- cracked, torn or oil-soaked rubber bushings
- a split rubber boot on the ball joint, with grease leaking out
- a bent or rusted arm, often after hitting a kerb or a deep pothole
6. Play in the wheel
With the car lifted, a mechanic can hold the wheel at the top and bottom and rock it. Any movement or clicking points to a worn ball joint or bushing.
What to do next
Do not wait: a badly worn control arm affects steering and braking, and in extreme cases a ball joint can separate. Replace control arms in pairs on the same axle so both sides behave the same, and always have a wheel alignment done afterwards. When you buy, choose an arm that comes with its bushings and ball joint already fitted: it saves fitting time and you know every wear part is new.
